Meeting of environmental Non Governmental Organizations and agencies with the Ombudsman to deal with the use of poisoned baits
Environmental Non Governmental Organizations and Management Bodies of Protected Areas created a National Working Group to deal against the use of poisoned baits in Greece. ελληνικά

In early 2012, a very serious incident of mass poisoning of birds of prey (a colony of griffon vulture and two golden eagles) in the protected area of Gorge of Nestos river, and an increase of more general concern after the poisoning of one brown bear in Prespes National Park and one Egyptian vulture in Meteora bit later, environmental Non Governmental Organizations and Management Bodies of Protected Areas created a National Working Group to deal against the use of poisoned baits in Greece.

Due to the inadequate response of the competent authorities in the incident, environmental organizations requested the intervention of the Ombudsman in a special meeting held on Dec. 14th at the facilities of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature in Athens. The objetive of the meeting was the discussion and analysis of the problem at national level. The meeting was attended by the side of the relevant departments, representatives from Directorates of Veterinary and Protection of Crop P
roduction of Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food, the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organization and the Veterinary Institutions’ Centre of Athens, while impressed was the absence of the relevant services of the Ministry of Environment (Special Secretariat for Forests, Department of Natural environment, Department of Solid Waste Management).

The members of the National Working Group against poisoning presented the problem and a general framework of proposals for the management and to registration of the use of poisoned baits comprising:



>The need of recognition of poisoning as basic risk for the public health and biodiversity at the national level and design of a national strategy to deal with it.
>The improvement of the legal framework linking different sectorial policies, both in relation to the protection of the natural environment and public health, as well as in the agricultural production process, the
use of chemical products and their management.
>The creation of a common protocol for recording poison incidents of control
and the formulation of a common database at national level.
>The organization of first aid provided in cases of poisoning, dead poisoned b
odies management with the necessary necropsies, the veterinary checks and toxicological tests and the effective removal and destroy of the bodies from the countryside.
Strengthening the guarding in Greek countryside.
>To improve preventive measures to counter the damage that cause the specie
s of wild fauna in the production processes through the realization of agri-environmental measures of the Rural Development.
>The improvement of the system for compensations in the cases of damage from wildlife and preventive measures for the protection of animal and plant capital such as electric fences and the Hellenic Livestock Guarding Dogs.
>To improve the management of biotopes for wildlife with the increase the food availability for necrophagous birds of prey (reintroduction of ungulates, creating of organized network of feeding station etc.).
>To improve of the mechanism sustainable management of pesticides in respect of which concrete measures were proposed in the consultation for the drafting of the National Plan of Action for sustainable use of pesticides.
>The parallel continuous information and public awareness as one unique national policy.



ARCTUROS and the University of Crete - Natural History Museum of Crete participated actively to National Working Group.
